Design Style

Clients sometimes ask our design professionals what their personal interior design style preference is. The answer is most likely something along the lines of “it’s your preference that is important.” Learning about different design styles is important for learning about your own taste but for now we’ll present a primer on the playfulness of Postmodernism.

Postmodernism is anti-authoritarianism and refuses to recognize the authority of any single design style.

Postmodernism

For making your own statement, for asserting your own individuality, for adding personal creativity, for being a bit rebellious—there’s no style like Postmodernism. The Museum of Modern Art describes Postmodernism as “a reaction against modernism. It is less a cohesive movement than an approach and attitude toward art, culture, and society. Its main characteristics include anti-authoritarianism, or refusal to recognize the authority of any single design style or definition of what art should be; and the collapsing of the distinction between high culture and mass or popular culture, and between art and everyday life. Postmodern art and architecture can be also characterized by a deliberate use of earlier styles and conventions, and an eclectic mixing of different artistic and popular styles and mediums.”

Playfully mix materials, colors, textures and unconventional art and furniture.

Flexibility

For some of us, it’s no surprise that Postmodern design philosophy arose in the 1960s, a time when parts of society increasingly challenged authority. Architects, designers and other creative types were bucking rigid modern functionalism in favor of flexible living spaces reflecting owners’ personalities. A usual goal of Postmodern interior design is to create a space that is truly unique.

Furnishings used in Postmodernism are limited only by one’s imagination and ability to find the unusual. An interior designer, of course, can help with that. Our access to resources is quite extensive.

This is your opportunity to playfully mix materials, colors, textures and sometimes even unconventional art and furniture. Designers love to help clients find that one “statement piece” that really sets a room apart. With Postmodern design, the entire room makes a statement. A bold one.

The Museum of Modern Art ( MoMA.org) describes Postmodernism as “a reaction against modernism."

Be Creative

Such creativity can be applied to any room. In a living room, for example, use a mix of vintage and modern furniture. Add bold, colorful rugs with geometric patterns. Accessorize with a combination of high-end art and playful décor items.

In the kitchen: Make your foundation brightly colored cabinets paired with stainless steel appliances. Open shelving will allow you to display an eclectic mix of dishware. Unique backsplashes with bold patterns can also add personality.

Ignore traditional design norms and prioritize your home's individuality.

In a bedroom: Combine classic with contemporary furniture. An unusually shaped headboard with a bold color can make a striking statement. Top it off with layers of bedding in different patterns and textures.

Don’t forget the bathroom: It’s a wonderful space for very bold wallpaper or tiles with geometric or floral patterns. Mingling retro and modern fixtures can be fun, especially with colorful faucets. Clinch the look with quirky accessories like an uncommonly shaped mirror.

If challenging traditional design norms and prioritizing individuality and creativity sounds like you, work with GOLSON DESIGNS. We can help you include elements of surprise and humor in your home.

Coffee tables are more than just functional pieces of furniture; they are central to the design and ambiance of living spaces. Whether your taste leans towards minimalist, rustic, or contemporary, this central table serves as a canvas for personal expression and practical utility. In this comprehensive guide, we explore the nuances of coffee table styling, offering tips, ideas, and inspiration to transform this seemingly simple piece into a focal point of your home décor.

Select a coffee table with character and personality to bring life to your living room or family room.

Understanding the Coffee Table

The coffee table has evolved from its humble beginnings as a tea-serving table in Victorian times to a versatile centerpiece in modern living rooms. Typically positioned in the center of seating arrangements, its purpose extends beyond holding coffee mugs to providing a surface for books, décor items, and occasional meals. Choosing the right table involves considering not only its size and shape but also how it complements the overall aesthetic of your living space. Contact us for a huge selection of amazing coffee tables.

The size of your living room and the seating arrangement dictate the dimensions of your coffee table.

Selecting the Perfect Coffee Table

When selecting the perfect table, several factors come into play:

Size and Proportion: The size of your living room and the seating arrangement dictate the dimensions of your table. It should be proportional to the surrounding furniture, neither too large nor too small.

Material and Finish: Coffee tables come in various materials such as wood, glass, metal, and even acrylic. The choice of material impacts both the aesthetic and durability of the piece. Consider how the material complements other furnishings and your lifestyle. For a table with natural elements look at Palecek

Style and Design: From sleek modern designs to classic, ornate pieces, coffee tables are available in a myriad of styles. Choose a design that harmonizes with your existing décor or serves as a statement piece to anchor the room.

Acrylic and glass coffee tables provide functionality, but also take up less space visually making a room appear larger.

Styling Your Coffee Table

Once you’ve chosen the perfect table, the next step is styling it to reflect your personality and enhance the ambiance of your living space. Here are some expert tips and creative ideas for coffee table styling:

1. Layering and Balance
Achieving balance is key to creating an aesthetically pleasing arrangement on your coffee table. Start with a foundational piece such as a decorative tray or a stack of books. Layer items of varying heights and textures to add visual interest without overcrowding the table.

2. Mixing Materials and Textures
Incorporate a mix of materials and textures to add depth to your coffee table display. Combine smooth ceramics with rough-textured natural elements like wood or woven baskets. This contrast creates a dynamic visual appeal.

Look for coffee tables to complement the decor of your space or select one that will become a conversation piece.

3. Greenery and Natural Elements
Introducing greenery such as small potted plants or succulents brings life and freshness to your coffee table. Choose low-maintenance plants that thrive indoors and complement your chosen décor style.

4. Personal Touches
Display personal items such as family photos, travel souvenirs, or heirlooms to personalize your table. These items not only add sentimental value but also serve as conversation starters.

5. Functional Décor
Select décor items that serve a dual purpose, such as decorative boxes or trays that can also hold remote controls or coasters. This ensures that your coffee table remains both stylish and functional.

6. Seasonal and Occasional Changes
Refresh your coffee table décor seasonally or for special occasions. Swap out items like candles, seasonal florals, or themed decoration to reflect the changing seasons or upcoming holidays.

Make sure that when selecting a coffee table that people can walk around it comfortably.

Coffee Table Styling Ideas

Minimalist Elegance
For a minimalist look, opt for a sleek, low-profile coffee table with clean lines. Style with a single art book, a minimalist vase with a single stem, and a small sculpture or geometric decor item for a contemporary touch.

Rustic Charm
Embrace rustic charm with a wooden table featuring natural grain and texture. Decorate with a woven tray filled with candles, a stack of vintage books tied with twine, and a small bowl of pinecones or dried flowers for a cozy, country-inspired feel.

Unusual shapes and color are a wonderful idea to add color to the center of the room.

Modern Chic
Choose a glass or acrylic table for a modern, airy look. Style with a metallic tray holding a few curated objects such as metallic sculptures, a small cluster of candles in varying heights, and a decorative bowl with polished stones or beads.

Eclectic Mix
Mix and match styles and eras by combining a vintage coffee table with eclectic decor items. Pair an antique trunk coffee table with an assortment of global artifacts, vintage postcards under a glass tabletop, and a mix of mismatched candles in colorful holders.

Once you've chosen the perfect coffee table, the next step is styling it to reflect your personality and enhance the ambiance of your living space.

The coffee table is more than just a piece of furniture — it’s an opportunity to showcase your personal style and creativity. Whether you prefer a minimalist aesthetic, rustic charm, modern chic, or an eclectic mix, there are endless ways to style your coffee table to suit your taste and enhance your living space. By carefully selecting the right coffee table and curating a thoughtful arrangement of décor items, you can transform this functional piece into a captivating centerpiece that ties your room together.

Your local interior designers can help you consider all the factors in selecting the style of coffee table and the styling for the surface, all to top off your room design in a way that makes your room more beautiful and reflective of your personality and lifestyle.

Custom window treatments are the finishing touches that elevate a room’s aesthetic, akin to how jewelry enhances attire. Window fashions have been integral to our company since its inception, beginning as a drapery shop-at-home service. Today, they remain a cornerstone of our comprehensive interior design offerings.

Our expertise has been exemplified in books, print and online magazines and is evident in our extensive presence in various media over our five-decade history. No better example is the most recent book by window fashions authority Charles Randall. He is the award-winning author of the best-selling window decorating series: Window Fashions, first published in 1986 with sales of more than one million copies. His 2020 book: Designer Window Fashions features 98 photos from 36 of our Decorating Den Interiors designers.

Order Charles Randall's latest book from Amazon.

After months of collaboration with Charles, we’ve finalized an update, incorporating new photos, including many from our latest International Dream Rooms, evaluated by interior design journalists from across the U.S. and Canada. The cover of his latest book showcases a winning room and draperies from our latest competition. Buy the book on Amazon

With this topic at the forefront of our thoughts, here are some Dos and Don’ts compiled from our collective experience and insights shared by Mr. Randall.

DO consider the type of window you have

Let a professional window treatment expert help with windows that have unusual shapes.

Whether it’s an arch, a bow or bay, a corner, a double-hung, French doors, a picture or another type, your Golson Designs professional can help you select the type of custom window treatment that will work best.

Tall windows require the help of our team which includes an expert window treatment installer.

DO remember that window treatments are not just about beauty

Though a simple window treatment may cover a bare window, it might not cater to all your needs. Window treatments extend beyond mere aesthetics; they encompass privacy, sun shielding, sound dampening, and beyond. Your Golson Designs consultant will engage you with tailored inquiries to pinpoint the specific features and advantages you seek.

DO consider the wide variety of options for your window treatments

Custom drapery can frame your windows as stationary drapery panels or close fully for privacy and insulation from heat and cold.

Draperies introduce softness and texture, while also serving as sound absorbers and insulators. They can be drawn closed or left open, among other functions.

Kitchens and bathrooms often require simpler window treatments; Top treatments, blinds and shades

Top treatments offer boundless options, encouraging both designers and clients to embark on imaginative journeys. Sometimes, all it takes is a cornice or valance to inject vibrancy into a space. And with intriguing names like cascades and jabots, the possibilities become even more captivating.

Fabric shades are clean-edged and neat and can take a back seat to beautiful architectural details when up and out of the way or add stunning emphasis

Whether standing alone or serving as a striking complement to other window treatments, shades offer a diverse array of shapes and configurations. Fabric shades, often referred to as “soft” shades, boast crisp edges and a tidy appearance. They can discreetly recede when raised, allowing architectural features to shine, or become focal points themselves, adding striking emphasis to the space.

Shutters allow you to adjust the amount of natural light entering the room. With easy manipulation of slats, you can diffuse light, reduce glare, or close all. They also add value to your home.

Shutters and blinds can fill a variety of roles. They can interface with any interior due to the range of colors, materials, stains, and decorative features.

It may be necessary to combine different types of treatments as seen here.

When one concept is not enough, DO explore the beauty of combining different types of treatments.

DON’T forget to consider decorative hardware and trim

Drapery hardware is the crowning jewel for your custom window treatments. Ask your professional to show you the many beautiful variations available.

These elements customize your treatment and add individuality. The range of materials available is huge and amazing.

The most important DON’T is don’t forget to call your Golson Designs professional for the best in custom window treatments.

When you embrace your personal design style, your home can become a showcase of all the things you love. What better way for your family and guests to learn what exactly makes you tick? When you feel relaxed in your space, other people will too.

Whether you are working on your own or with an interior designer, you’ll need to start with a general idea of what you’re looking for. You don’t need to have your own style figured out in full. But it does help to have a general idea of what goals you’re trying to achieve or what spaces you’re trying to transform.

Hiring an interior designer will make your life easier and save you money.

To help you get a bit more detailed in your thinking, here are some tips to help you on your journey of interior design self-awareness.

Create a Mood Board

A mood board is a visual tool that helps you communicate your design concepts and ideas. It’s a collection of images, materials, color palettes, text, and other elements arranged to evoke a particular style or feeling. You can do this on a wall, on a tray, and if you prefer to make your mood board online, use an online service such as Pinterest or Canva

Creating a mood board will help you define your own personal design style. Try a free mood board generator from Canva.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Go beyond your mood board and collect some images of rooms you like. This blog is an excellent resource for images. Analyze each room and make notes about the specifics in each that you especially like and why you like them. Pay attention to colors, patterns, furniture styles, and decorative accents that consistently appear in your selections. Are there any common themes emerging?

What’s your personal lifestyle?

At Golson Designs, we are dedicated to lifestyle decorating with a central focus on creating spaces that suit our client’s way of life. Reflect on your own, and your families lifestyle, interests, and personalities to determine what you want your space to feel like. Do you prefer a cozy and rustic vibe, a sleek and modern aesthetic, or a colorful and eclectic atmosphere.

When you feel relaxed in your space, other people will too. Create a relaxing, easy to live with interior.

Research Design Styles

Familiarize yourself with different interior design styles by researching and learning about their characteristics, history, and key elements. Some popular styles include Traditional, Scandinavian, Mid-Century Modern, Industrial, Bohemian, and Coastal. More recently, we have learned about recent styles such as Japandi, Hygge and Biophilic. In addition, there is sustainable and eco-friendly design to consider.

Experiment with Samples

Before making any significant design decisions, experiment with samples of paint colors, fabrics, and materials to see how they look and feel in your space. This will help you visualize your ideas and make informed choices.

When you're more sure of your design style start collecting samples so you can see if materials look good together.

Start Small

You don’t have to overhaul your entire home at once. Start small by updating one room at a time, incorporating new elements, and gradually refining your style as you go along. A good way to start is with professional window treatments.

It doesn't matter your style, our interior designers can work with whatever you ask for.

Seek Professional Guidance

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure about defining your style, for the best results consider working with Golson Designs. Finding your personal design style is an exciting journey that involves exploring different aesthetics, understanding your preferences, and discovering what resonates with you. We can help and make it even more fun!

Spring heralds its arrival and invites us to bask in the newfound warmth and sunshine—a welcome change after the confines of winter. This season is not only a period of renewal for nature but also an opportune moment for us to rejuvenate our outdoor living spaces. Now is the time to extend the spring cleaningritual from our interior living quarters to the yard, porch, and patio, ensuring these areas are as inviting and comfortable as the inside of our homes.

Looking forward to summer? Are you ready for entertaining? Call us today for help with your outside space!

Getting the yard ready

Embarking on this endeavor begins with dedicating some much-needed tender love and care to your yard. Prior to delving into any decorative ambitions for your porch or patio, it’s essential to address the basics: clearing any remnant leaves, trimming the grass, and preparing the soil for new plantings. This initial step lays the groundwork for transforming your outdoor area, providing a clean canvas upon which to build.

With the yard in order, it’s time to reassess your porch, balcony or patio setup ready for your outdoor living paradise.

Assess what you already have

With the yard in order, it’s time to reassess your porch and patio setup. This might mean deciding whether to refresh your current decoration or start fresh. Whether it’s a cozy nook on your front porch or an expansive patio, you may opt to introduce new elements gradually or overhaul your outdoor living space entirely. As you reintroduce furniture and decor from storage, consider whether your existing furnishings needs reupholstery services or if it’s time for a change.

If your patio furniture is feeling a bit dull, indulging in a new set could be the perfect way to uplift your outdoor space ready for summer.

Treat yourself to new patio furniture

If your patio furniture is feeling a bit passé, indulging in a new set could be the perfect way to uplift your outdoor space. Spring cleaning is not solely about tidiness but also about rejuvenation and reimagination. Evaluate your requirements for seating, entertainment, and decoration, and consider how new elements can enhance the ambiance of your patio. This might be the year to elevate comfort with plush outdoor sofas, vibrant throw pillows, and cozy blankets, creating an inviting outdoor retreat.

Let us help with your outdoor living space

For those seeking a truly transformative outdoor space, consider enlisting the expertise of Golson Designs. Embrace the full potential of spring by dedicating your time to outdoor leisure, confident in the knowledge that a professional is tailoring your space to reflect your personal style and comfort. Tastes in dining room style are as varied as tastes for food itself. Depending on personal preferences, individuals may choose to incorporate elements from multiple styles to create a dining room that reflects their unique personality and lifestyle.

Historic Dining

The ancients in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome had communal dining, but it was limited to the wealthy. During the Middle Ages, communal dining halls were still prevalent, especially in castles and monasteries. The great hall was the beginning of multi-functional space for dining, socializing, and other activities.

Formal Dining

Over the centuries, dining spaces became more refined with elaborate furniture, tapestries, and artwork. The Victorian era saw the height of formality with dining rooms often extravagantly decorated and furnished, elaborate table settings, and strict etiquette governing dining practices. In the U.S., it was, perhaps, Thomas Jefferson who set the standard for the grand dining room. Because the dining room was also used as a reception room, the dining tables were designed for folding away.

With the rise of the Industrial Revolution, separate dining rooms became more common in middle-class homes, reflecting a growing emphasis on privacy and family life. The early 20th century saw a move towards more casual dining habits, influenced by changing social norms and the advent of smaller, more intimate family units. Dining rooms in middle-class homes became less formal, often doubling as multipurpose spaces for various activities. In recent decades, the dining room has continued to evolve in response to changing lifestyles and architectural trends.

Selecting the Table Shape

While the area and shape of the available space will dictate many decisions, the selection of the shape and style of the table may be the fundamental building block for creating the design for the space. That decision can help you settle on the overall functionality you want for the space.

A rectangular dining room table is still a very popular space saver.

The rectangular table has been the standard form since the ancients. Through time, they became larger and more ornate with decorative features. The 20th century saw a variety of dining table shapes and styles emerge, reflecting changing tastes and lifestyles. Rectangular tables remained popular for formal dining rooms, while smaller round or square tables became common in kitchens and breakfast nooks. Round or oval tables promote more interaction because each guest can see everyone’s face.

Round or oval tables promote more interaction because each guest can see everyone’s face.

Additionally, modular, and extendable tables have become popular for their versatility and space-saving features, especially in smaller homes and apartments. To make a smaller space look larger, consider a glass top table. Glass creates the illusion of space and gives a room a light, airy feel.

To make a smaller space look larger, consider a glass top table. Glass creates the illusion of space and gives a room a light, airy feel.

Storage

The selection of furnishings for storage also will be dictated by the space being used. Fortunately, today’s variety is greater than ever. Flexibility is key with dining room storage units designed to accommodate various items, from dinnerware and glassware to table linens, serving utensils, and even extra pantry items.

Storage is essential in a dining room and there are many sizes of cabinetry on the market to fit most spaces.

Storage pieces also give you surfaces on which you can display art or other accessories to add personality to your space.

Today’s dining spaces tend to be vastly different from the dark traditional look with intricate moldings, elegant heavy draperies, and large wooden tables. Color is now more common in dining areas. Even a traditional look can have more visual interest with patterns and texture. See these beautiful wallcoverings from Thibault available through your interior designer.

The style choices are numerous. You can have the clean lines, minimalist aesthetics, and functionality of modern/contemporary. Or, yes, farmhouse rustic. Maybe you’d prefer Scandinavian simplicity or an industrial look. There are even more choices with Bohemian, coastal, mid-century modern, eclectic, and, of course, traditional.

Biophilic Interior Design

Biophilic interior design, where nature and natural elements take center stage in our homes and workplaces, is the leading trend we’ve seen at the recent High Point N.C. Home Furnishings Market. It’s about connecting people and nature within the home environment. Biophilic design elements play a therapeutic role as they are thought of as calming, uplifting, and anxiety-reducing. Designs should include hues that mimic natural occurrences by bringing nature into the home. This can be in the form of rounded walls, curved furniture, skylights, natural elements and colors.

Biophilic Design is when nature and natural elements take center stage in your home.

Biophilic uses outdoor inspirations as gigantic mood boards that allow you to select from a multitude of colors, materials, shapes, and patterns. Think lush plants, warm wood, cool stone, and water and light features. Not only does it look beautiful, but it also has been proven to boost our moods, increase productivity, and reduce stress levels.

Nature’s calming influence

The emphasis on Biophilic is based on the growing appreciation for nature and its calming influence on our lives. People are seeking more comfort and coziness at home in the form of painted nooks, moody wallpaper, warm wood tones, and rich, colorful upholstery. There is a rise of soft, warm nuances that are spirit-lifting and dopamine-enhancing. We want spaces that bring nostalgic moments to mind, fond recollections from our past that elicit a sense of warmth, comfort, and longing.

Curved furniture fosters conversation and calming connections.

A symphony of color

We are seeing a cheerful bouquet of colors which will continue. Blues and greens, of course, are obvious colors for connecting with nature. Adding to those two popular colors are pink and yellow undertones. For a calming, relaxed, and welcoming interior, earthy or nature-inspired tones are taking over. Hues such as ochre, tan, taupe, light pinks, and light greys are taking over bedroom and dining room schemes.

Classic floral and lattice patterns are mingled with textural solids and delicate small-scale patterns for ease of layering. The color palettes explore a variety of inviting tones including buttercup yellows, corals, sage greens, clean blues, and earthy neutrals.

If you are looking for a Biophilic color palette try out Sherwin Williams’s collection: Emerald Designer Editionor Behr’s BioNature Collection

Enhance your home with touches of nature with Biophilic design.

More emphasis on details

Intricate details enhance a room and make it utterly unique and interesting. They are indicators of quality, identity, functionality, and care. They tell stories and create memories. Like jewelry for your wardrobe, intricate details are the final piece of a room’s design. There is a definite trend to focus more on detail in selecting furnishings.

Texture also adds detail to a room’s design. In fabrics we see mohair, dimensional and mixed yarn boucle to add a softer personality to the design. There is also continued interest in Chenille, and shearling. In metals, we see burnished bronze and brown-based metals versus yellow or silver -based metals. In ironworks, there is a more hand-forged look. In stone, a more honed feeling, with softer raw edges. In wood, there continues to be raised grains and wire-bushed looks which creates a feeling of being close to the material. In natural materials, there is a move from split rattan to rush weaving and rush seating. In glass, we are seeing more ombre’, some opalescence, and more color. Tinted, milked frosted, and ombre are the story whether through urns and vases or tabletop.

Intricate details are the hallmark of a truly unique and fascinating space.

Soft lines and more farmhouse

This year, designers and homeowners alike are leaning toward furniture and home elements that embrace soft lines. Spaces continue to have curvilinear shapes and a cocooning environment. In a turbulent world, we look for our homes to be our safe-haven or refuge. Cozy, comfortable living rooms or family rooms are on trend. Curved lines represent the fluid movement of water. Furniture designers have spotted the opportunity to bring people back together; a curved sofa, for example, can do that.

Yes, Farmhouse Design is still popular.

The farmhouse style of design is ever popular.

Today’s farmhouse design takes the comfortable, relaxed farmhouse style and adds modern touches such as smooth lines, glossy accents, and neutral color schemes. It’s less rustic, more sophisticated and uses contemporary design elements like stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and sleek lighting. It is often characterized by using natural materials, such as wood, stone, and metal, as well as vintage and distressed furniture.

The key to these trends is the focus on calm, comfort, and connection.

Get ready with a trumpet fanfare! The Pantone Color of the Year for 2024 is …

PEACH FUZZ. Yes, Peach Fuzz it is. Pantone 13—1023

Peach Fuzz, Pantone's Color of the Year 2024.

“In seeking a hue that echoes our innate yearning for closeness and connection, we chose a color radiant with warmth and modern elegance. A shade that resonates with compassion, offers a tactile embrace, and effortlessly bridges the youthful with the timeless.” That’s from Leatrice Eiseman, executive director, Pantone Color Institute™

Peach Fuzz, claims the Pantone website, “captures our desire to nurture ourselves and others. It’s a velvety gentle peach tone whose all-embracing spirit enriches mind, body, and soul.”

While Pantone may be THE Color of the Year, there are others.

Benjamin Moore

Our partner Benjamin Moore has proclaimed Blue Nova as its 2024 Color of the Year, described as “violet and blue coming together in an elevated, sumptuous hue.”

How did all this start anyway?

We found an article at ArchitecturalDigest.com titled Here’s How Color of the Year Mania Came to Be.

“In the 1957 romantic comedy Funny Face, Kay Thompson — playing a larger-than-life fashion editor inspired by Diana Vreeland–leads a musical number in which she marshals her staff (and presumably the world at large) to “think pink!” Bolts of Pepto Bismol–colored fabric unfurl across her carpeted office floor as she tells her junior editors to “bury the beige.” As it turns out, Funny Face was right on schedule. In real life, pink was all the rage, dousing everything from a 1957 Ford Thunderbird to a 1957 RCA Whirlpool electric range. The parallel underscored a uniquely 20th-century phenomenon—that colors themselves could have moments.”

Isn’t that funny since this is still the season of Barbie pink?

Barbie pink is ever popular.

More from that article: “It can be tempting to think of color trends mere whim, or—when a trend really takes off—as a lucky stroke of creative genius. But as that other esteemed fictional fashion editor, Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, famously schooled her hapless assistant Andy, the colors of consumer products are never an accident. They are deliberately chosen, work their way through retail networks high and low, and end up tinting the wardrobes of even those who claim to be indifferent to fashion.”

Peach Fuzz, Pantone's Color of the Year 2024.

The Pantone Color System has been the standard for color matching since 1963. In 1999, the Pantone Color Institute created the Pantone Color of the Year educational program to engage the design community and color enthusiasts around the world in a conversation around color. The Pantone website states: “We wanted to draw attention to the relationship between culture and color. We wanted to highlight to our audience how what is taking place in our global culture is expressed and reflected through the language of color. This thought process rings just as true today as it did back in 1999. That’s one of the major reasons why, each year, so many around the world look forward to our Pantone Color of the Year announcement.”

Pantone may not have been the first, though. Pratt & Lambert, a paint manufacturer geared to the interior design market, claims their program dates to 1996.

How does all this help you?

First: It does stimulate some fun conversation and debate, even if it’s only about: How in the world do they come up with those names?

Second: It fosters creativity. Most of us don’t want to be boring with our interiors. Colors of the year make us think beyond the basic red, blue, yellow, green, or black and white, or even beige.

Third: It helps us learn about different paint brands and what they offer.

Color plays an important role in how interior decorating affects mental health. Color moves us. Color can set a mood and create a conversation. The website colorpsychology.org puts it this way: “It can excite or soothe your mood, raise or lower your blood pressure, even whet your appetite! Whether it’s innate or learned, it’s undeniable that color has a vital impact on how we go about our lives.”

We are dedicated to lifestyle decorating with a central focus on enhancing well-being within our client’s living spaces. Recently, the interior design community has embraced the Danish term “hygge” (pronounced hyoo-guh), which encapsulates a design philosophy rooted in fostering contentment and overall well-being through thoughtful space planning and decoration.

It’s no surprise that hygge has found a place in the world of interior design, as our homes play a pivotal role in our comfort and happiness. While each individual’s lifestyle may lead to their unique interpretation of hygge, there are several common themes that everyone can incorporate into their own living spaces.

Surrounded by a favorite rug and drinking cocoa complements the Hygge design style.

THINK ABOUT COMFORT HYGGE STYLE

First and foremost, think about comfort. What elements make you feel at ease? Is it the inviting touch of soft textures, the luxury of lounging on a plush sofa, or the soothing presence of neutral colors and earthy tones? Consider what’s underfoot and the appeal of throw pillows that cradle your back or head. When the temperature drops, do you reach for a cherished blanket, an heirloom Afghan, or a quilt that evokes fond memories? Does your furry friend have a cozy spot by your side?

Does your furry friend have a cozy spot by your side? Everyone appreciates a soft blanket to sleep on.

LET YOUR LIGHTING SET THE MOOD

Now, let’s talk lighting. What kind of illumination sets the perfect mood for you? Is it the warm and intimate glow of candles, the mesmerizing flicker of a real or simulated fire, or the flexibility of a dimmer switch? Don’t forget the subtle influence of scents, which can also contribute to the ambiance.

Illumination sets the perfect mood every time.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH NATURE

Nature can be a powerful source of comfort. How do greenery and plants affect your space and your mood? Consider incorporating plants, whether they’re hanging from the ceiling or adorning your shelves. Additionally, images of nature as wall art can introduce a sense of tranquility and connection to the outdoors. Don’t forget wood. Even the most contemporary of rooms warms up when elements of wood are introduced. You don’t have to go full hunting-camp look to experience the effect of hygge.

Any space can feel warmer with the addition of wood and plants.

DON’T FORGET YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE

Outdoor spaces, too, can benefit from thinking hygge. Make that deck or patio the perfect space to say “Let’s eat outside” or “Let’s have happy hour outside.” Elements of fire, wood, lighting, and textures all can add to the coziness of your outdoor space.

Outdoor spaces can also benefit from thinking hygge.

Incorporating these elements into your home’s design will help you achieve a hygge-inspired interior that’s tailored to your unique tastes and needs. In the end, it’s all about creating a space where you can truly relax and find contentment, because your home should be your sanctuary.

Contact GOLSON DESIGNS or call (407) 902-3011 and tell us about your style or how you would like to incorporate Hygge into your home.

In the world of fashion, the iconic black dress donned by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 classic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” remains etched in our collective memory as an epitome of sophistication and grace. Just as various James Bonds have defined black-tie attire, it begs the question: which actor wore it best? The allure of black transcends mere clothing; it is a hue that has intrigued scholars of both fashion and color, revealing its multifaceted symbolic meanings, from austerity and virtue to wealth, sophistication, eroticism, mourning, and even a hint of intrigue and darkness, as noted in a recent Harvard Crimson article.

A TIMELESS CLASSIC

Today, we see black emerging as a timeless classic, radiating sophistication and elegance. Picture this: walking into a room where black has been thoughtfully incorporated feels much like making a grand entrance in the perfect black ensemble. It exudes an air of opulence, inviting admiration and intrigue.

Glam and swanky, black and gold are the feelings the client wanted for their main-level bathroom.

A TRANSFORMATIVE COLOR

Black is a transformative color; it can be that dramatic focal point your space craves. A single carefully chosen piece of furniture, a set of luxurious window treatments, or a collection of exquisite accessories can elevate your interior design. The expert touch lies in harmoniously weaving black into the tapestry of your space, perhaps complemented by accents of opulent gold. This harmonious pairing will undoubtedly elicit gasps of awe and appreciation from your guests.

Stark white walls contrast with an array of black decoration pieces such as the charcoal sofa, black and white geometric draperies and art.

EMBRACE GEOMETRICS

But why stop there? Imagine adorning your walls with black and embracing geometric shapes and metallic tones through exquisite wallpapers. From tween rooms that give them confidence for the next stage in life to sophisticated primary bedrooms that exude a sense of calm and luxury, black-infused wallpapers can become the magnetic center of your space.

BALANCE IS KEY

As in all things design, balance is key. Decorating with black doesn’t mean surrendering to a somber or stark ambiance. Quite the contrary, when artfully combined with other colors and textures, black can transform your living space into a stylish, inviting haven. It’s about striking that perfect equilibrium, just like crafting a memorable outfit that leaves an indelible impression.
