This is a good-sized master bathroom that did not make the best use of its space. The large, triangular shaped soaking tub used too much water and was not comfortable. There was a half wall between the toilet and tub that cut off the room. The shower frame had unattractive supports.

The odd-shaped tub was replaced with a free standing, contemporary oval shaped soaking tub, which is more comfortable and practical. A shelf was built behind the tub to provide a landing surface. The half wall was removed between the toilet and tub to open up the room. The entire bathing area was tiled from floor to ceiling with vertical accent tile in the shower, with a frameless shower door to further open the space. This resulted in a clean look and spacious feel when entering the room. New cabinets, granite countertops and LED lighting complete the room design.

Challenges

The family room is a part of an open floor plan between the kitchen and the kitchen dinning nook as well as the entrance and walkway to the master bedroom so figuring out how to coordinate without all of the rooms blending together was challenging. Originally, the flooring in this room was builder grade carpet but with the heavy traffic pattern, deciding on a flooring that would remain functional was a challenge. Lastly, as the heavy traffic through this area was discussed, the space we had left to design was not as large as we initially believed. We had to figure out how to accommodate the seating needed without closing off the space.

Design Solutions Provided:

To resolve our challenge with the open floor plan and making sure the rooms around the family room still had their own distinct design personality, we incorporated browns and creams to help with the flow between the teal theme in the kitchen dinning nook and the gold theme in the master bedroom. Since the master bedroom can be seen from the family room, we used a gold print rug to help with the flow between the two rooms.  We also decided to replace the builder grade carpet with dark hardwood floors. By using a low back, L-shaped sectional, we were able to add enough seating to accommodate the homeowner’s lifestyle. Also, since the sectional has a low back, those who are in the family room, kitchen or kitchen nook are able to participate in conversation while being able to see one another. The television can also be seen from the other areas.

What the client wanted

The client wanted to turn this bedroom into a home office with a lot of function. She wanted a full-size writing desk where she could do paperwork, a place for her visiting grandchild to sleep, storage for files, craft supplies, sewing supplies and machine—and a place to sew! She also wanted the room to be fun and different from the rest of her house, but still keep with her contemporary style.

Solutions

A custom built-in wall unit was designed in contemporary cabinetry. There is a pullout for her printer on one side and one for her sewing machine on the other. There are file drawers and lots of shelves to hold fabrics, etc. All of this is behind the doors in order to keep the space from appearing cluttered. A large work surface with LED under cabinet lighting provides plenty of space to sew and craft. The contemporary, kidney shaped sofa is covered in a kid-friendly fabric and is wide enough (with loose back pillows removed) to serve as a comfortable bed. The walls are painted in a granny apple green for a fun, bright atmosphere.

The main challenge in this design was creating a space that was both elegant and functional with the limited space and inward opening French doors. The purpose of this office was to conduct the owner’s business and not just paperwork afterhours. Since the homeowner intended the office to be used for clients, we needed to create a space that comfortably accommodated visitors. Since the homeowner is from Cape Verde, a discreet African influence was desired. Therefore, selecting the correct accessory to illustrate this influence was another challenge.

Since our main challenge in designing this room was the limited space and inward opening doors, we decided to incorporate an executive sized, l-shaped desk. By allowing this piece to be the largest in the room, the client was able to have a desk that best suited the needs to run a business from home by having enough space for paperwork and storage, while portraying an elegant and bold look. We then used slim metal frame chairs to provide a comfortable seat for the clients when they visit. By going with a chair with a slim frame, we were able to add two without the room feeling cramped when the doors are either opened or closed. We selected a hand crafted, tribal, hair on hide rug to provide the African influence desired.

This room started off as a tragedy as there was a fire and the entire part of the house was destroyed. Once the dust settled and it was time to rebuild, my client decided to create something amazing. This client wanted a home theater reminiscent of theaters in the 40’s, complete with a curved stage, wet bar and director’s area. They requested that the Victorian style of their home not be forgotten in this design. Additionally, they needed closed storage for their Christmas decorations, etc.

A closet was built the length of the room to provide storage. It also took care of one of the windows that needed to be addressed and gave us a clean slate on that side of the room. The walls are now beautiful wood that was custom crafted on site (over many, many months!). Rose motif carved accent rail runs around the room, which is reflective of the Victorian wood work in other areas of the home. To provide drama, motorized draperies follow the curve of the stage. The track had to be manufactured on site in order to perfectly match the curve of the stage. In order to provide better acoustics, upholstered panels are inserted around the room. The seating is absolutely amazing. Of course, each seat reclines, but the front seats also have armrests that raise up so the homeowner can stretch out to enjoy a show!

The gold and black swag valances make a perfect addition to the design. We could not find a fabric that worked with the carpet, woodwork and upholstery, until I turned this one to the wrong side and we all fell in love with it. Motorized black out shades fit perfectly under the valances to provide full darkness when lowered.

This home movie theater is now the most used room in the home.

From the challenges that were presented with this dining room, we decided to use armless chairs with a slim silhouette in order to seat 6 comfortably. The armless chairs allow enough space on either side of the table for people to walk to and from the pool deck. In case additional seating is needed during the large family gatherings, we added 6 barstools to the island area. We also decided to use a sliding panel shade to create a simple and accessible way for our client to have privacy when needed. In addition, a teal, carved wool rug was used to add an accent color to the white dinning set and white walls.

Issues Addressed
This kitchen dining area was dark and looked more like a living room with the formal wallpaper and draperies. The floor was in good shape, but the client didn’t like the color. However, we did not have budget to replace the floor so we needed to choose colors that would bring out the warm accents in the tile. The space is odd in shape with one side angled making furniture and rug placement difficult.

Our Solutions
Kathie chose to center the chandelier and table with the large window, leaving plenty of space to get around the table to be seated. In order to have a rug large enough for the table, the new area rug was custom cut on the back corner in the same angle as the wall and then bound. Light yellow paint lightens up the space and brightens the tile floor. Roller shades in a natural grass pattern provide function to the decorative draperies.

Some challenges

The home owners asked us to provide them with a luxurious master bedroom of their dreams without providing any style direction since they had no idea what they wanted.

The problem was that we only had communication with the husband through email and zero communication with his wife as there was a language barrier and both live in Africa. So essentially, we needed to create the bedroom of their dreams without having any clue what their dreams looked like.

Our solutions

We wanted to create a space of intimacy and luxury so we added a king size button tufted upholstered bed in a creamy white and matching upholstered panels on either side of the headboard to add the soft touches that the long wall needed. That, along with the extravagant bedding collection in rich faux fur embellishments, shimmering golden color palette, and regal geometric pattern it became the ultimate place for luxury and comfort.

The floor lamp and chandelier in bright gold leaf finish and clear beads crystal added to the rich color and feel to the room. We also wanted to provide the owners with a nice place to sit and relax together with a nice book or a glass of wine to unwind so we added a double chaise in a rich navy velvet fabric for them to relax in. The beautiful window treatment compliments the bed and completes the look.
